10 SEO Tips and Tricks for Startups

Whether you are a newbie to Search Engine Optimization, or an expert veteran, the tips and tricks I’m going to provide you today will be useful to increase the success and reachability of your website.

SEO has several benefits: it is free, helps you increase your website’s ranking in the search results, boost organic traffic, and gain brand recognition. In fact, people trust search engine recommendations. But they mostly look at those in the first SERP, reason why you need SEO!

SEO can be overwhelming at the beginning, because of the great amount of information you need to know and the constant updates to search engine algorithms. You need to stay up to date in regard to digital marketing techniques if you want your business to stay afloat! 1. Research your keywords

Don’t assume you know what internet users are searching for. Many times, we take for granted the fact that we know what people want, what their interests are, what words they use to make an online research. We might think they search for “automobile”, while they use the word “car” instead.

To avoid these mistakes, you have to make your own research! There are many free tools available on the web that can help you brainstorm relevant keywords for your topics. The most popular are Google Keyword Planner, Moz Keyword Explorer, SpyFu, and SEMrush. You can even use the Google Search bar by starting to type a word; you will see all the suggestions Google gives you. Those are the most researched keywords!

Remember also to perform an extensive keyword research periodically. Preferences and tastes change, so don’t make the mistake of assuming that the best ranked keywords will remain the best forever!

2. Make a smart use of your keywords

Include relevant keywords in headings, subheadings, meta description, body text, and URLs.

Besides including your target keywords in those elements, you should keep in mind some wise tips:

  • Your page title should be clear, concise, and inspire curiosity

  • Your meta description should be descriptive - indeed - short, and possibly contain a call to action

  • Your URLs should be straightforward, explaining the main content of the page in a short way

  • The body of your page should contain relevant information. Try to write long, yet meaningful text - let’s say at least 1000 words - to get a good ranking

  • Use subheadings! This will help you better structure your content, improve its readability for users, and make the scanning easier for crawlers.

3. Add alt-text to your images

Crawlers, aka search engines programs that scan and download web pages, can’t see images; they only read text, therefore, adding meaningful alt-text to your images increases the ranking of your pages. Indeed, alt-text should be a short description of the image and should be related to the content of the page where the image is placed.

4. Don’t overuse keywords

Keywords are important, but using the same ones too many times in a single page can be detrimental! In fact, search engines will give a poor rank to pages that are overstuffed with the same keywords. Just use them in the right place, without excess!

5. Remove duplicate pages

Duplicate pages sink your website ranking when search engines index your pages. Make sure to use the XML tag rel='canonical" to mark the pages as unique. You can perform a website audit using tools such as SEMrush, to check for duplicate, dead or broken links - which you should eliminate.

6. Optimize your website for speed

Nobody wants to wait for a website to load. We live in a frenetic world and nobody has time to waste, or people are simply impatient! They want everything, now! So, make sure your web pages are not heavy to load. If they are, optimize them for speed. You will make sure you don’t lose potential customers. You can use the Google PageSpeed tool - or one of the other hundreds of tools available out there - to have insights on the speed and potential problems of your website, both on desktop and mobile devices.

7. Make your website responsive

It is of extreme importance that your website be accessible from different type of devices. The website should automatically scale its elements to match the screen size of the device on which it is loaded, otherwise users become frustrated and leave the page because its view is uncomfortable. So, make sure pages render properly when loaded from a smartphone or tablet, in addition to a desktop. Besides, search engines give preference to websites that are mobile-friendly, so this will increase your ranking in the SERP.

8. Create a blog

Write articles related to your domain of expertise. Make a plan to post new content with a certain frequency in order to keep your users engaged and provide search engines with new pages to index. By doing so, search engines will start seeing you as an expert in your field, you will build your website authority and increase its ranking in the search results. Lastly, but not least, this will help you build your own brand!

9. Reuse old content

After years in the business, you will have a ton of web pages to deal with. The old ones will probably lose significance over time, so instead of letting them sit on the web without a purpose, you should update and reuse them, make their content meaningful for the time being and your current audience, and try to answer your users’ questions. In this way, you will have a pretty stable size for your website, avoiding the number of pages to infinitely grow. Moreover, you will be able to reuse an optimized version of evergreen content, without having to struggle to constantly find new topics!

10. Collaborate

Inbound links to your web pages help increase your website ranking, credibility, and influence. You can insert hyperlinks in your articles, for example, that relate to other pages of your website. Another thing you can, and should, do is collaborate with other websites. The best bet is to network with other blogs in the same area of interest as yours. Moreover, ask your customers to write a review, tag you on Instagram or any other social network; if they are satisfied with your product or service, they will do it with no hesitation!

These are only some of the tips and tricks you can use. And remember, always analyze your competitors to understand what is working and what is not for them, so that you can have a clearer idea of what strategies to implement and what to avoid. Finally, stay up to date! Times, people, tastes, preferences evolve, so does SEO.
